Chelsea star says Frank Lampard was way in over his head

One of Chelsea’s stars opened up about Frank Lampard’s time at the club and how he was way in over his head as the manager.

For one of Chelsea’s stars, Frank Lampard was way in over his head during his time as the coach. As we saw the Englishman progress at Derby County, Roman Abramovich thought he would be able to do a good job as the Blues’ manager. He believed that as one of the club’s biggest legends, somehow his success as a player could translate as a manager. But that’s not how managerial success works.

There are many examples of great players who couldn’t cut it as football managers. Diego Maradona is the biggest example of this. But Lampard’s issue had a lot more to do with the lack of experience he had at the highest level. His failures don’t mean he won’t be able to coach a top club in the future. All he needs is more time at a modest club in order to get the experience he needs. But for now, players like Jorginho will talk about Lampard’s time at the club.

For Jorginho, Lampard was in over his head.

Jorginho is one of the players that Frank Lampard wasn’t able to use properly during his time as a manager. We are talking about an Italy international who has been considered crucial for pretty much any manager who coaches him. But Lampard wasn’t able to find him a proper spot inside his starting eleven. A similar thing happened with N’Golo Kante. Both players are doing extraordinary work under Thomas Tuchel now, they just needed proper guidance.

Which is exactly where Frank Lampard was lacking. This is what Jorginho told ESPN about the Englishman: “Look, I’ll be really sincere here on Lampard. I believe, given he was a legend at the club, he skipped some steps necessary for learning before moving to a big club. He came to a club where he is a legend, without having experience at other clubs. I think he came too soon, skipped a few steps ahead and wasn’t ready for a job at this level, to be honest.”
