Despite being a key part of Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea squad this season, Thiago Silva accepts that his time as a footballer is almost up.

Thiago Silva is aware his career is ‘almost over’ and has admitted that he is yet to discuss a new contract with Chelsea.

The 39-year-old defender joined Chelsea in 2020 from Paris Saint-Germain. He has played 141 games and helped the club win three trophies, including the Champions League in 2021. His importance remains high, having made 24 appearances across all competitions this season.

Yet, while his contract is set to expire in June, Silva is staying focused on the present.

“I don’t have anything scheduled for later, I’m just looking to have fun,” Silva said after helping Chelsea beat Middlesbrough to qualify for the Carabao Cup final on Tuesday.

“We know it’s almost over, but it’s not the end yet. So pick the right time. I’m still able to maintain a good performance, my numbers are good, and this gives me peace of mind to continue. Now, the future belongs to God.

“Let’s finish well here, these four months and see what happens going forward, but I’m super relaxed about that.”

Chelsea will play Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on February 25, 2024.

The match could mark Silva’s last chance to lift a domestic cup title in England, if he is to leave the club this summer.

The Brazilian has lost all three of his domestic cup finals in his Chelsea career so far, twice in the FA Cup and once in the Carabao Cup.
