The Blues are on the brink of making a new addition to their staff.

Chelsea are set to unveil Christoph Freund as their new sporting director in the upcoming days.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano. The journalist claims Freund will sign a contract with Chelsea, adding that it is ‘just a matter of time’ before the parties complete everything. He’ll join the club from Austrian side RB Salzburg.

New Chelsea manager Graham Potter has endorsed the move to Blues co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.

Freund has held the sporting director role at Salzburg since 2015 and played a key role behind the club’s signings of Erling Haaland, Naby Keita, Dayot Upamecano, and Sadio Mane.

The 45-year-old Austrian also has an excellent relationship with many of the Salzburg players, and while he has previously rejected offers from other clubs, he is keen to join Chelsea.

His Salzburg team held Chelsea to a 1-1 Champions League draw on Potter’s debut as manager last Wednesday in London.
