The England international has failed to display his best form since joining Chelsea in the summer.

Graham Potter believes heavy criticism toward Raheem Sterling is unfair, admitting Chelsea’s poor form.

Chelsea remained unbeaten for nine games after Potter’s arrival earlier this season. However, three consecutive defeats have raised serious questions about the Blues’ form in recent weeks.

A narrow defeat against Arsenal in the London derby saw Sterling come under fire for his underwhelming display. But Potter believes it’s unfair to single out the former Manchester City star.

“Players go through moments in their career where it isn’t so positive and sometimes they go through periods where everything they touch is gold, so to speak,” Potter said.

“I don’t think you can zoom in on the individual; the team isn’t functioning as well as we’d like. That has an impact on the individuals, and Raheem’s part of the team, so the work is for us to improve the team, improve the structures.

“I’ve no doubt about Raheem’s quality, ability. He’s a proven top, top player.”

Sterling will face his former side when Chelsea take on City in the EFL Cup on Wednesday. Let’s see if Potter’s side could bounce back from their recent results by eliminating the Premier League champions.
