The Blues accepted Borussia Dortmund’s loan offer for Maatsen earlier in January.
Ian Maatsen has left the door open for a possible return to Chelsea next summer.
Maatsen joined Borussia Dortmund on a loan deal earlier in January, hoping to secure more regular playing time at the Bundesliga. Since joining Chelsea’s academy, the Dutchman has spent loan stints at Charlton, Coventry, and Burnley. This time, however, he has decided to continue his career abroad.
Asked by Sky Germany about a possible move back to Stamford Bridge, Maatsen said: “I’d love to come back to the summer. Why not? But we’ll see what the future brings.”
Maatsen hoped to finally enjoy his breakthrough season at Chelsea this season, with Mauricio Pochettino allowing him to make short appearances at the start of the season. However, tough competition in the Blues’ squad prevented him from securing a regular spot in the lineup, leaving him with only three starts in 15 appearances across all competitions.
Maatsen has made two starts for Dortmund since arriving at the club, registering an assist in his side’s 4-0 victory over Koln. Reports in German media have claimed the Black and Yellows have an option to sign the 21-year-old for £30m at the end of the season.
