The Blues failed to add a new striker to their ranks in the final hours of the transfer window.

Chelsea reportedly pushed to sign Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi in the final stages of the summer transfer window.

Awoniyi has attracted interest from a number of elite English clubs since his successful move to Nottingham Forest last season.

Forest signed Awoniyi after his fantastic displays for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga. Last season, the 26-year-old scored ten goals in his 27 Premier League appearances, helping Forest in their battle to avoid relegation.

According to the Athletic, Chelsea inquired about Awoniyi 48 hours before the transfer window’s deadline. The Blues reportedly hoped to complete a move for the Nigerian star on the deadline day but failed to reach an agreement with Forest.

A major reason for Forest’s response was their agreement with Tottenham to sell Brennan Johnson for a club-record fee of £47.5m. Johnson’s departure puts more pressure on Awoniyi as Forest’s main striker this season.

Awoniyi has found a perfect start to the 2023-24 campaign, scoring three goals in three matches. The former Liverpool star is expected to link up with Victor Osimhen in Nigeria’s attacking line during this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

After the international break, Forest will be back in action with a home game against Burnley on September 18.
