The German side have finalized a crucial contract renewal ahead of the January transfer window.

RB Leipzig have signed a new contract with Mohamed Simakan until 2027.

Following a move from RB Salzburg last year, Simakan has developed into a key player at Leipzig.

His performances were crucial to the German giants’ DFB-Pokal triumph last season, which attracted interest from several elite sides.

Chelsea, who are also keeping tabs on Josko Gvardiol, were the frontrunners to sign Simakan. Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham also showed interest in signing the 22-year-old.

However, Leipzig have managed to tie down their star defender to a new five-year deal.

“It was a big step for me when I arrived at the club a year and a half ago,” Simakan told the club’s website. “I felt happy here from day one and I was welcomed with open arms.

“That is really important for me as it allows me to perform on the pitch and to develop in the best possible way.

“The club and the city have quickly become my second home and I’m quite simply delighted to be here.

“We have already achieved a lot in 2022 and I’m looking forward to everything that is still to come.”

Leipzig are chasing Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga table, sitting six points below the German champions.

The two sides will lock horns in the first Bundesliga matchday after the World Cup.
