Frank Lampard does not trust Kepa Arrizabalaga and is eyeing Mike Maignan whom he came up against in the Champions League.
Chelsea’s first season under Frank Lampard has been one of the positives and negatives.
The Blues legend has given youth academy graduates first-team opportunities. Moreover, the Stamford Bridge-based outfit employs an attacking brand of football loved by fans and neutrals alike.
However, Lampard has failed to arrest Chelsea’s defensive issues. A reliable cetral defensive pairing was never to be found, while Kepa Arrizabalaga continued to flounder in goals.
Chelsea are still persisting with their goalkeeping options but are keeping tabs on available options. The Blues came up against Andre Onana and Mike Maignan in the Champions League, with the duo impressing Lampard.
Sky Sports have reported that Maignan is in the lead to compete with Kepa at the Stamford Bridge. Lille have the funds after Victor Osimhen’s purchase but would allow the goalkeeper to leave.
The 25-year-old was an ever-present figure for Lille in Ligue 1 last season. He would command a fee of €30 million to make the French side part company. Maignan will be an improvement on Willy Caballero and allow Lampard some peace of mind.
Maignan is not the only player linked with the Blues. Thiago Silva has all but signed on the dotted line. Meanwhile, Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz are also inching closer to joining Chelsea’s roster.
