The Blues might have to play against the Reds without a key defender.
Chelsea star Reece James has left England’s camp for their Euro 2024 qualifiers with a hamstring issue.
James played only five minutes in Three Lions’ 2-1 win over Italy on Thursday. Gareth Southgate would’ve most likely start the Chelsea star in his side’s upcoming clash against Ukraine.
However, James won’t be available for selection after withdrawing from England’s squad with a new injury setback.
“Reece James has withdrawn from the England squad and will not feature against Ukraine on Sunday,” a statement from the national team reads.
“The full-back has returned to Chelsea for assessment on an ongoing issue.
“No replacements are planned as Gareth Southgate’s squad, including the suspended Luke Shaw, continue their preparations at Tottenham Hotspur Training Ground.”
James has consistently played for Chelsea despite having minor injuries in recent weeks. However, he could miss his side’s first match after the international break.
According to Telegraph, James’ injury is not serious. However, the club won’t be able to provide a timeframe for his injury before conducting further tests.
Chelsea will take on Aston Villa on April 1 before hosting Liverpool three days later. Graham Potter’s men will hope to return to winning ways in the Premier League after drawing 2-2 with Everton in their last match before the international break.
