The Blues goalkeeper has suffered another injury setback which delays his return to action.

Edouard Mendy has to spend more time on the sidelines after fracturing his finger during Chelsea’s training.

The Senegal international suffered a shoulder injury in the World Cup group stage. With his fitness improving significantly, Mendy hoped to return to action next week.

But a new injury setback has forced Mendy to go under the knife.

A statement from Chelsea on Saturday read: “Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has undergone an operation on a fractured finger sustained in training this week.

“The 30-year-old will work closely with the club’s medical department during his rehabilitation phase.”

The club has provided no timeline for Mendy’s recovery. The Senegal international will reportedly stay out of action for at least two more weeks.

In Mendy’s absence, Kepa Arizabalaga has played as Chelsea’s No.1 keeper. The Spain international has kept one clean sheet and conceded two goals in the Blues’ last two matches.

A disappointing run of results has seen Graham Potter’s side slip to the tenth spot on the Premier League table.

Following a 1-0 defeat against Manchester City in the Premier League, the Blues must take on the Citizens again in the FA Cup on Sunday.

The London giants will then return to the Premier League when they meet Fulham four days later.
