The Chelsea star has undergone surgery and will miss the rest of the campaign.
Ben Chilwell picked up an anterior cruciate ligament injury during his side’s 4-0 win over Juventus last month. The Chelsea star immediately started his recovery process, with the club hoping to avoid an operation.
However, roughly a month into the defender’s rehabilitation, Chelsea decided to send him for surgery. This will rule the 25-year-old out for the remainder of the season, leaving Chelsea without a key player.
Chilwell provided an update on his fitness after going under the knife on Thursday.
Publishing a photo of himself with thumbs up, Chilwell captioned the Instagram post: “Hi guys. Just wanted to let everyone know i am on the way home from a successful op.
“I feel very positive and motivated to work like a beast to get back on the pitch with my boys soon and help this great club win more trophies. Thank you all for the support and nice messages.”
Chilwell was a key player for Chelsea before the injury. He started playing as a left wing-back under Tuchel this season, impressing with his great versatility. Gareth Southgate also recalled him to England’s squad after dropping him in September.
It is not clear whether Chelsea will sign a replacement for Chilwell this winter. However, Thomas Tuchel has reportedly blocked a loan move for Malang Sarr, who might cover for Chilwell’s absence.
The Chelsea manager spoke about the importance of the wing-backs for his system in October.
“Very important, very important position in the system we play,” the Blues boss stated.
“Very important part of the position is to arrive in the box and to create a goal threat from that position.
“Not to just be the ball-possession guy on the side and to be responsible for ball control. This is what we want and what we demand.”
