Chelsea have confirmed that their upcoming Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid has been moved to a new venue.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, Chelsea’s Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid will now take place in Bucharest.

The Blues were supposed to travel to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on February 23 to take on La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid.

However, a ban on UK flights to Spain over coronavirus fears means there has been a change of venue. The Romanian capital is the new venue as Chelsea will meet Atletico at the Arena Nationala.

The second leg is still scheduled to take place at Stamford Bridge on March 17.

A statement on the Blues’ website read: “UEFA has confirmed that Chelsea’s Champions League Round of 16 first leg match away against Atletico Madrid and will now be played at the Arena Nationala in Bucharest in Romania.”

“The date of the match, Tuesday 23 February, and the kick-off (8pm UK time) will remain the same.”

The change in location comes after other Premier League sides saw changes in their venues as well. Manchester City and Liverpool saw their away games against German sides Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig moved to Budapest in Hungary. Elsewhere, Manchester United’s Europa League tie against Real Sociedad was switched from Spain to Turin. Arsenal also saw their clash with Benfica moved to Rome.
