Brentford came back from behind to stun the Blues at Stamford Bridge.
Brentford defeated Chelsea 4-1 in their Premier League game on Saturday. The Bees ended Chelsea’s five-game winning streak with a shocking comeback, putting the Blues’ third spot in danger.
🐝 The Bees stung Chelsea with a perfect comeback!
Chelsea struggled to find momentum since the start of the game, while Brentford looked way sharper in the first 20 minutes. The Bees had two major chances to open the scoring, with Ivan Toney sending both efforts over the bar.
Despite improving their attacking performance in the late stages of the first half, Chelsea had to wait until the 48th minute to break the deadlock. Antonio Rudiger converted NGolo Kante’s goal, only for Brentford to equalize the game through Vitaly Janelt two minutes later.
However, the Bees did not stop there. Christian Eriksen converted Bryan Mbemou’s low cross to put his side forward in the 54th minute.
Chelsea’s defence suddenly crushed under Brentford’s swift transitional play, with the visitors doubling their lead just before the hour mark. Following an inch-perfect through ball from Toney, Janelt completed his brace by chipping the ball past Edouard Mendy. It took Brentford only 12 minutes to turn Chelsea’s 1-0 win into a disappointing home defeat for the hosts.
Chelsea pushed hard to come back into the game in the final ten minutes, but their efforts only provided more space for the Brentford forwards. Yoane Wissa made it 4-1 for the guests in the 87th minute, completing the Blues’ hellish start to the Premier League after the international break.
What’s next for Chelsea?
Chelsea remain in third place despite the defeat, but they now feel the pressure of Arsenal. The in-form Gunners lurk behind Thomas Tuchel’s side being five points down with a game at hand.
The Blues will now prepare to face Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday. They will then return to Premier League action by meeting Southampton three days later.
