The Blues edged out Newcastle in the penalty shootouts after a last-minute equalizer from Mykhailo Mudryk.
Chelsea defeated Newcastle in their Carabao Cup game on Tuesday. Following a 1-1 draw at full-time, the hosts converted all their penalties to secure a place in the EFL Cup semi-finals.
What happened?
Chelsea struggled to find their feet in the game while Newcastle looked for an early breakthrough. Following a bizarre blunder from Benoit Badiashile, Callum Wilson made it 1-0 for the visitors in the 16th minute.
The goal forced Chelsea to put more bodies forward as they pushed to get the equalizer before the break. However, Newcastle’s brilliant defence didn’t allow their opponents to create enough serious chances.
Chelsea’s dominance only intensified after half-time as they took complete control of the possession. However, the Blues had to wait until the 92nd minute to finally score the equalizer.
A poor clearance from Kieran Trippier provided a chance for Mykhailo Mudryk to smash the ball into the back of Newcastle’s goal and make it 1-1. The Ukrainian forward was among the four Chelsea players who then converted their penalties. For Newcastle, however, missed penalties from Trippier and Matt Ritchie proved decisive as they crashed out of the tournament after a frustrating defeat at Stamford Bridge.
