An easy win in the second leg was enough to secure Real Madrid’s place in the next round.
Real Madrid defeated Chelsea 2-0 in their Champions League quarter-final match on Tuesday. The Blues failed to find the back of the net on home soil, losing the tie 4-0 on aggregate.
No miracle at Stamford Bridge!
Chelsea struggled to find their feet in the game early on but gradually took control over the possession as the first half went on.
The Blues rarely found serious goalscoring opportunities, but their improved confidence helped them find spaces between Real Madrid’s lines.
The hosts finally made a golden chance in the final minute of the first period. It was the perfect time for Frank Lampard’s side to get ahead, but Thibaut Courtois stopped Marc Cucurella’s shot from close range with a fantastic save.
Chelsea’s struggle in front of the goal continued throughout the second period. Following a few missed chances from the hosts after the break, Real Madrid finally punished them in the 58th minute.
A brilliant run and cutback from Rodrygo saw Vinicius latched onto the ball inside Chelsea’s six-yard box. The Brazil international, however, preferred to pass the ball back to Rodrygo, who smashed it home with a powerful finish from close range.
The goal killed off Chelsea’s hopes of pulling off a comeback. The Blues made a few more efforts to score, but poor finishing touches from Mykhailo Mudryk denied them the equalizer.
Rodrygo then completed his fantastic performance by scoring his second goal of the night in the 80th minute. The goal sealed Real Madrid’s victory as they inched one step closer to defending their European title.
The Blancos will meet the winners of Manchester City’s tie against Bayern Munich on May 9.
