Pressure mounts on Graham Potter as Chelsea’s top-four chances become more unlikely with each game.

Chelsea lost 1-0 against Southampton in their Premier League game on Saturday. The Saints claimed a league double over Chelsea for the first time since 1993.

More pressure on Potter

Chelsea struggled to find their feet in the game early on while Southampton took control of the possession.

The Saints made several serious chances in the first 20 minutes but couldn’t convert any of them. Chelsea’s push for a goal only gave Southampton more space for counter-attacks toward the end of the first period.

The visitors eventually snatched a well-deserved lead through James Ward-Prowse just before the half-time whistle. The 28-year-old registered the 17th free-kick goal of his career from 25 yards to make it 1-0 for the Saints.

The Blues pushed hard for a quick equalizer when the second half started but their pressure fizzled out as the game went on. Southampton continued their well-organized defending, keeping the hosts at bay.

The Saints, who played under the stewardship of interim manager Ruben Selles, came close to doubling their lead. However, they settled for a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have won only one of their last ten games, continuing a five-game winless run in the Premier League. Potter’s men will take on Tottenham in a league derby next Sunday.
