Another disappointing display at Stamford Bridge saw Chelsea suffer their third Premier League defeat of the season.
Chelsea lost 1-0 against Aston Villa in their Premier League game on Sunday. Ten-man Blues were not able to salvage a point from their home match against Villa.
What happened?
Aston Villa found a better start to the game as they managed to create several chances early on. Lucas Digne and Nicolo Zaniolo forced brilliant saves out of Robert Sanchez as Chelsea struggled to gain possession at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues looked slightly better at the beginning of the second period. But a foul by Malo Gusto on Digne in the 57th minute changed the course of the game. The referee sent off the Frenchman with a straight red card after a VAR review.
Villa then doubled down on their pressure to break the deadlock, finally making it 1-0 in the 73rd minute. Ollie Watkins rifled a powerful low shot past Sanchez from a tight angle to put the visitors ahead. Unai Emery’s men had the chance to double their lead ten minutes later, but Sanchez made another fantastic save to deny Jacob Ramsey.
Chelsea vs Aston Villa: Man of the Match
Sanchez deserves the Man of the Match title despite Chelsea’s defeat. The Spanish goalkeeper made six saves, preventing Villa from converting three big chances. The home defeat could’ve been more painful for the Blues if it wasn’t for Sanchez’s impressive performance.
