The South American quickly made and then quickly deleted a racially insensitive social media post but could not escape punishment.
Edinson Cavani is ‘at peace’ with the Football Association’s decision to ban him from three games for an Instagram post containing language considered offensive in some contexts.
Cavani, who arrived in England only two months back, used the word “negrito” in a social media post back in November.
The 33-year-old striker made the post after scoring twice and helping Manchester United complete a comeback against Southampton in the Premier League.
On Thursday, the FA stated that his post was ‘improper’ and ‘brought the game into disrepute’ and the former Paris Saint-Germain man was handed a three-game suspension along with a £100,000 fine.
Cavani does not agree with the governing body’s assessment of his comment but accepts his punishment.
“Hello everyone, I do not want to extend much in this uncomfortable moment for me. I want to share with you that I accept the disciplinary sanction knowing that I am foreign to English language customs, but I do not share the point of view,” he posted on Instagram.
“I apologize if I offended someone with an expression of affection towards a friend, nothing further was my intention. Those who know me know that my effort is to always seek the simplest joy and friendship!
“I appreciate the countless expressions of support and affection. My heart is at peace because I know that I always expressed myself with affection according to my culture and way of life. I send you a sincere hug.”
Cavani will miss the New Years’ Day game against Aston Villa in the Premier League, the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City, and the FA Cup third-round game against Watford.
