The Everton boss confirmed he once had a chance to coach the Red Devils but had to turn them down in the end.

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed he turned down the opportunity to coach Manchester United as he was on the verge of joining Real Madrid at the time.

The Red Devils have struggled to recapture their glory days since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, and Jose Mourinho have all taken the Old Trafford hot seat since the Scot stepped down.

But none of these managers managed to restore United back to the top of English football, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the latest coach to try his luck.

And now Ancelotti has revealed he could’ve taken charge of the 20-time English champions prior to his appointment at Real Madrid in July 2013.

“You want to know from me [about coaching at Man United]?!“ said Ancelotti as quoted on Goal.

“I can say that I still keep a fantastic relationship with Sir Alex, and we met when he decided to stop (retire).

“But I was close to Real Madrid, and so I appreciate the fact that at that time he talked to me. And that’s it, no other opportunity [to manage United].”

Ancelotti’s Everton side will play host to United on Wednesday night for a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at Goodison Park.
