Martin Keown trusts Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has the opportunity to build himself as an Arsenal legend after signing a contract extension.

The arrangement sees the captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, become the Gunners’ most paid player. He is anticipated to stash £60million throughout the following three years.

Supporters from all over have been celebrating at the news that their best player has dedicated his future to the club.

The talkSPORT moderator Adrian Durham asserted on Drivetime that Gunners fans shouldn’t get carried away with the current news.

He said: “I think Adrian’s just being mischievous. Whose to suggest he can’t fulfill his dreams playing under [Mikel] Arteta?”

“Would you really have thought that Arsenal could have won the FA Cup at the end of last season?”

“Would you really have believed that could have beat Man City, Chelsea, and Liverpool in as many weeks? And then there’s the way they’ve started this season.”

“He’s convinced by Arteta and I think that’s the really good news, first of all for the Arsenal fans who have got a manager who is making things happen and turning that football club around.”

“It’s a juggernaut he’s turned around – it’s a massive football club.”

Such is the respect Keown holds for Aubameyang, he trusts the previous Borussia Dortmund striker has the ability to lead the north London side to Premier League fame and set up his place in Arsenal history.

Keown stated: “Aubameyang loves playing there and he wants to be a legend in the future, so why not?”

“He’s 31 years of age and he’s turned down Barcelona, by the way, to stay there. I think that tells you how much he loves the football club and what he’s looking to achieve.”

“If they win the Premier League in the next three years then he certainly will become a legend if he plays a major part in that.”

“You look at the goals record that he’s got and he can’t get near [Thierry] Henry and I’m not even sure he can catch Ian Wright.”

“But he wants to follow in their footsteps. I saw a piece with Ian Wright just a few days ago and he came across very humble during that exchange. He comes across a very genuine character to me.”

“It does do something for you that football club – it’s a huge club. I will love that football club until the day I die.”

“He feels that way and it does come out in the way he plays. He takes responsibility and has no fear in front of the goal.”

“He loves it, so why would he want to go somewhere else? I know what Adrian said about him being ambitious and going into a different situation, potentially in Europe.”

Interestingly, though, Keown doesn’t consider himself a Gunners legend. He has made over 400 appearances for the club and won 10 honors.

Discussing the topic with Jim White, he said: “No, not at all. When you consider some of the players I was lucky enough to play with my job was made really easy wasn’t it?”

“I just shoved that ball to Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit, or a Marc Overmars, Dennis Bergkamp, and Thierry Henry.”

“We had an embarrassment of riches, it was easy. They were doing all the work for me, and we [defense] just had to get our job right.”

“When you’re a young player coming in you’re fighting to get into the team so it’s about the qualities you have.”

“But to be successful you’ve got to be a part of a team and once you realize that anything can happen for you.”
