During an Extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo, the CAF announced its stance on FIFA’s biennial World Cup plans and the African Super League.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced its support for FIFA’s plans for a biennial World Cup at an Extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has pushed hard for the world’s most famous football tournament to take place every two years, instead of the traditional four-year gap.

Both UEFA and CONMEBOL have opposed this plan, prompting Infantino to suggest some organizations are afraid to lose their spot at the top.

CAF supports biennial World Cup plan

Now CAF, whose president, Patrice Motsepe, recently claimed FIFA’s controversial plan could greatly benefit African football, has thrown its support behind the proposal.

“CAF welcomes the FIFA Congress decision to conduct a feasibility study on hosting men’s and women’s FIFA World Cups every two years,” the resolution read.

“If the FIFA study concludes it is feasible, CAF will fully support hosting the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup every two years.”

FIFA’s chief of global development and former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who held a presentation in Cairo, told the General Assembly he believes the two-year World Cup plan is doable.

Furthermore, he added African football would benefit from holding annual youth tournaments.

African Super League gets the go-ahead

The CAF General Assembly also approved plans to launch the African Super League.

The proposed tournament is said to host around 20 teams of the continent’s best clubs. Africa’s football confederation believes it will not only boost revenue for all parties, but it would also deliver a higher level of competition.

Infantino has promised CAF of FIFA’s full support for the competition, which he believes is a step in the right direction for African clubs.
