The Belgium international will likely miss out on the remainder of the season and his participation in the EURO 2020 is also doubtful.

Borussia Dortmund confirm Axel Witsel will stay on the sidelines for “an extended period of time” after suffering a torn Achilles tendon.

Dortmund beat RB Leipzig 3-1 on Saturday, with Erling Haaland scoring twice and Jadon Sancho once in the away Bundesliga fixture.

The emphatic victory, however, came at a cost as one of their key players, Witsel, picked up a serious injury.

The 31-year-old sustained a knock without any enemy influence and had to be helped off the pitch after just half-an-hour of action.

On Sunday, following an initial prognosis overnight, BVB confirmed the extent of his injury, suggesting that the midfielder could miss the remainder of the season.

“Unfortunate news,” the club released a statement on social media. “Axel Witsel suffered a torn Achilles tendon during yesterday’s match and will be out for an extended period of time.

“We all wish Axel a speedy and successful recovery.”

Witsel’s lengthy injury means he is also a doubt for the Euro 2020, with the reschedule tournament due to start on June 11.
