Chelsea are looking to shore up their porous backline with the addition of Champions League losing finalist Thiago Silva.

Frank Lampard has rekindled the hopes of the Stamford Bridge faithful. Every time he sent on the pitch, the stands were brimming with excitement.

There was always a lingering issue about their defensive capabilities. It was a problem that continued to haunt them for the duration of the 2019/20 campaign.

Chelsea are looking to address that issue with the addition of Thiago Silva. The experienced Brazilian defender will be a breath of fresh air although he turns 36 in September.

Former Blues defender, Craig Burley, is in awe of Silva despite his advancing age. He believes the PSG man can hold his own against the best but admitted his addition is a stop-gap solution.

“The guy can defend,” Burley told ESPN FC. “He’s just been part of a team that’s got to the Champions League final and lost to the best team on the planet at the moment in Bayern Munich.

“We’ve talked about the center-half position, all the other guys are out there chasing the top players as well so you’ve got to get in there quick, make a decision, make an offer, sort that position out and worry about it in 12-18 months’ time about filling it again.

“You can’t sit on your backside and watch him go somewhere else and then start looking about for other center-halves of that quality and experience, because there aren’t many out there.

“It makes sense for me. It’s not ideal signing a [soon to be] 36-year-old, but it’s a fit 36-year-old who’s got good character, good experience and can still play.”
