Cameroon pulled off an incredible comeback to finish the AFCON in third place.

Cameroon defeated Burkina Faso in their match for the Africa Cup of Nations’ third place on Saturday. The hosts bounced back from their crushing penalty defeat against Egypt to secure the bronze medal.

AFCON classic!

Burkina Faso found a great start to the game while their opponents seemed too exhausted and unmotivated. A bizarre own goal from Andre Onana followed Steeve Yago’s opener to make it 2-0 for the guests just before the interval.

The hosts extended their lead only four minutes into the second half. Following a brilliant cross from Bertrand Traore, Djibril Ouattara put another one past Onana. Being three goals down, Cameroon was not the favourites to win the game before the hour-mark.

However, a goal from Stephen Bahoken in the 70th minute revived the Indomitable Lions’ hopes for a comeback. The AFCON top-scorer Vincent Aboubakar closed the gap to one goal by scoring in the 85th minute. He then completed his brace by scoring Cameroon’s equalizer only two minutes later.

Following a goalless extra time, the game went to penalties. Onana saved Blati Toure’s decisive penalty before Oyongo Bitolo completed his side’s epic comeback.

Cameroon ended their AFCON campaign by claiming third place while Burkina Faso left the tournament without a medal. The Indomitable Lions will now prepare for their World Cup qualifying tie against Algeria in March.
