Newcastle are fighting an uphill battle to stay at the Premier League, but their new signing is already dreaming big.

Newcastle signed Bruno Guimares as part of their squad recruitments in the January transfer window. The Brazilian midfielder joined the Magpies on a £40m deal from Lyon.

Guimares has joined Newcastle amid their relegation battle at the bottom of the league table. The Magpies sit 19th in the Premier League with 15 points from their 21 matches.

Following a Saudi takeover last year, Newcastle are technically the wealthiest football club in the world. They spent more than any other team in the European top five leagues during the January transfer window, which clearly showed how serious they take their sporting project at the club.

Speaking to the club’s website, Guimares insisted he has joined the club with hopes of bigger achievements.

“I’m obsessed with winning,” the Newcastle midfielder said (via SportMax).

“Given Newcastle’s project, all the information they provided me with, we’ll have a great team here – as it was for a long time in the past.

“We want more, we want to win the Champions League.”

Asked about his individual ambitions for the future, Guimares said: “I want to increase my goals and assists.

“Obviously as those who have signed me know well, I’m a midfielder not an attacker. I aim to get the ball into the attacking players.

“The fans can expect a lot of desire and determination. Goals aren’t the strongest part of my game.

“I’ll get the team moving and contribute to playing the ball out with quality. It’s good that it’s clear that Newcastle have signed a midfielder, not an attacker.”

Newcastle will face Everton in a crucial game on Tuesday, before facing Aston Villa five days later.
