Ace Football previews the Premier League match between Brighton and Southampton, and offers betting tips, odds, line-ups, and team news.

The sole Premier League game on Monday night will see Southampton take a quick trip to Brighton & Hove Albion seeking a return to winning ways.

A victory at the Amex would move the eighth-place visitors back into the top-five in the standings. Brighton, though, can build a seven-point cushion over the relegation zone by claiming all three points themselves.

The last time these two sides met ended in a 1-1 draw back in July at St Mary’s. Neal Maupay handed Brighton a 17th-minute lead before Danny Ings equalized just past the hour-mark to ensure a share of the spoils.

It should be an interesting affair between these clubs. They excel in attack, but not so much in the defense, and have plenty to play for down the southern coast.

Brighton Form & Stats

Pascal Gross’ injury-time penalty secured a valuable point in their 1-1 draw against Liverpool last time out. The Reds may have had two goals ruled out for offside, but Brighton were good value for a point.

The Seagulls often pressed Liverpool at the Amex, with Aaron Connolly looking particularly lively. The Irishman even won a penalty, which Maupay missed, and had a big miss early in the match. Victory may have been possible had the hosts converted their chances better.

Keeping the Premier League champions at bay, though, extended Brighton’s unbeaten run to three games. Although their woeful defense is a concern, having kept just two clean sheets this term. Their last home win, meanwhile, came in a 2-1 triumph over Arsenal in June (P9 D4 L5).

Defeats for Fulham and West Brom, however, have eased the pressure on Graham Potter’s men. Tariq Lamptey’s return from suspension should aid the defense. But Adam Lallana is out and Maupay is doubtful for the match.

Key Team Stats
  • Drawn their last 3 home matches in a row
  • Won just two of their 10 league games this season (D4 L4).
  • Winless in their last 7 matches in a row against Southampton in all competitions (D4 L3).
  • There has been a penalty in 60% of their 10 games this season.

Southampton Form & Stats

The Saints blew a two-goal advantage to lose 3-2 to Manchester United last time out and surrendered their eight-match unbeaten run. Had it not been for their second-half demise, they could’ve moved into third in the standings.

More worrying, though, are the ongoing defensive issues. Southampton boast the Premier League’s seventh-best offensive record on 19 goals, but they’ve conceded three or more goals on four occasions already.

That slip-up against United proved yet again that Southampton can be too open down the back. They’ve struggled for consistency in this area, having kept four clean sheets but conceded so many times in a single game.

Ralph Hasenhuttl even implied in his pre-match conference he may opt for a more conservative approach at Brighton by stating ‘we must sometimes try to win games by only scoring once or twice’.

Although the potential return of top-scorer Ings, who is back in training after a knee injury, is a huge boost. A late decision will be made on the striker’s availability.

Key Team Stats
  • Lost just one of their last eight league games (W5 D2).
  • Unbeaten in their last four away league games (W2 D2).
  • At least 1 first-half goal has been scored in 90% of their 10 league games.
  • Scored in both halves in 50% of their 10 league games.
  • Only failed to score once in their last 17 league games.
  • BTTS in 50% of their 10 league games this season.
