The Amex plays host to one of the weekend’s biggest games on Saturday afternoon with Manchester United hoping to bag their first win of the Premier League campaign against Brighton.

Both sides head into the encounter in unfamiliar territory, with Brighton sitting up in eighth-place in the league table. United, on the other hand, sit a lowly 15th after losing their opening game to Crystal Palace. Expect them to go all out on the south coast to open their account, ideally with three points straight in the bag.

But Brighton, who secured a sound 3-0 win away to Newcastle last weekend, have hit a decent patch of form and aren’t afraid to mix with any of the big guns. The outcome of Saturday’s clash could prove decisive, with the two clubs to meet again four days later at the same venue in the Carabao Cup.

Brighton Form

Graham Potter’s side head into the clash on a bout of excellent form, having overseen three consecutive victories. They’ve also won two of their last three Premier League home matches against United.

Despite losing the previous fixture 3-0 against the Red Devils, Brighton have every reason to hope for no repeat. They may have lost their league opener 3-1 to Chelsea, but they generally impressed. Three wins in a row have since followed, including nine unanswered goals.

Last weekend’s 3-0 triumph away to Newcastle United was particularly impressive. Neal Maupay scored twice inside the opening seven minutes before Aaron Connolly bagged a late third for the Seagulls. EFL Cup triumphs also came their way against Portsmouth and Preston North End.

Brighton’s patchy home form, however, is a concern with just a single victory in 10 league outings this year.

Key Team Stats
  • Won three of last four home games against Manchester United.
  • Won two of last three league games.
  • Over 2.5 goals scored in five of their last six home league games.
  • Just one home win in 10 league games in 2020 (W1 D4 L5).

Manchester United Form

The Red Devils are out for redemption following a shocking 3-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace in their season opener. It was a dismal performance by all accounts at Old Trafford. Not one starter in the line-up stood out, including the spark that helped revive the squad last season in Bruno Fernandes.

A 3-0 victory over Championship side Luton Town in a midweek Carabao Cup clash was welcome. Although it was a heavily changed line-up in Kenilworth Road, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will likely recall his regulars for Brighton.

The United boss will be desperate for a strong result at the Amex as Tottenham, Newcastle, Chelsea, and Arsenal await in the club’s next four league fixtures.

Recent history, however, favors United strongly in this tie and, if they perform to their usual standards, a decent result should be possible.

Key Team Stats
  • Won last three league games against Brighton.
  • Won and kept a clean sheet in last four league away games.
  • Under 2.5 goals in nine of last 11 away league games.
  • Haven’t lost their first two league games since 1992/93.
