Phil Foden steals the spotlight as the Sky Blues slide up to second place in the league table following an easy win at the Amex.

Manchester City put in a formidable first-half display while losing control of the game a little in the second period but eventually recorded a convincing 4-1 victory against Brighton in their Premier League meeting on Saturday.

Manchester City completely outplayed Brighton in the opening 45 minutes, scoring thrice in a space of about 20 minutes.

Ilkay Gundogan drew first blood, collecting the ball from Bernardo Silva and tapping it into the empty net from six yards to punish goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for a howler at the back.

Pep Guardiola’s men second came on two minutes before the half-hour mark through Phil Foden, who also tripled his side’s advantage just three minutes late.

The hosts at the Amex improved after the break and managed to pull one back from the penalty spot after 80 minutes, with Alexis Mac Allister’s attempt proving too hot to handle for Ederson, who got his hand on the shot but didn’t do enough to keep it out.

Foden was once again involved in City’s fourth of the night as he slipped the ball in the box to substitute Riyad Mahrez, who hammered home a left-footed strike right at the death.

The victory saw Man City leapfrog Liverpool and move up to second place in the Premier League standings, just two points behind leaders Chelsea.
