The Bees leave the pitch empty-handed – not for the lack of trying though, as their stings weren’t fatal enough to pierce through a stubborn Blues backline.
Chelsea narrowly edged past Brentford on Saturday in what was a splendid show of their resolute defense and admirable ability to grind out results.
Chelsea spent the majority of the second half defending their one-goal lead, having broken the deadlock in the final minute of the first half. It was Ben Chilwell who had put his side on the front foot, with the left-back lashing a stunning half volley into the top corner.
Brentford looked more threatening after the break and came very close to few times. Edouard Mendy, however, stood his ground each time as he produced a fine save late in the game to deny Ivan Toney and three more excellent ones in the final minutes to deny Saman Ghoddos, Pontus Jansson, and Christian Norgaard.
The 1-0 victory takes Thomas Tuchel’s men atop the Premier League table, one point ahead of second-placed Liverpool. Thomas Frank’s side, meanwhile, stay at seventh place on 12 points.
