After a dramatic final part of this Copa Libertadores final, one of two Brazilian clubs was crowned as the new champion of the tournament.
The Copa Libertadores final has a brand new champion after a dramatic final between Palmeiras and Santos FC. Initially, Conmebol agreed to allow a total of 5.000 supporters to witness this historic final in the middle of a global pandemic. The plan was to scatter all supporters all over Maracana stadium. However, the agreement wasn’t respected at all. Supporters from both sides were too close together while the match was taking place.
This was a completely irresponsible situation from the final organizers that should be addressed in the near future. As far as the match is concerned, most of it was incredibly defensive until the last 20 minutes. That’s when things got a lot more exciting for both sides. From the first minute of the game, it was evident we were about to witness aggressive tackles from both sides. This same formula was what took the game to a whole new level of excitement.
A Hollywood movie script final.
There was a moment during the final minutes when manager Cuca didn’t allow a Palmeiras player to take the ball for a throw-in. It was right at that moment when chaos ensued and the referee had to step in. He sent Cuca out of the match and the Santos manager decided to jump with the crowd to witness the final moments of the game.
Less than a minute after this moment, Breno Lopes scored a last-minute header after a beautiful cross from Rony. A goal that was strikingly similar to Leo Messi’s header in the 2009 Champions League final in Rome. With this dramatic ending, Palmeiras wins the 2020 Copa Libertadores and they get the last ticket to the FIFA Club World Cup that’s about to start.
