The Polish sharpshooter recently became the second-best Bundesliga goalscorer in history, and he is eyeing another record this season.
Robert Lewandowski does not “worry too much” about becoming the player to score most goals in a season in Bundesliga history but says it’d mean “a lot” to him to break Gerd Muller’s long-standing record.
Lewandowski was on the scoresheet in Bayern Munich’s 3-1 win over Werder Bremen over the weekend.
The second-half strike marked the 267th Bundesliga goal of his career, with the striker moving into second place alongside Klaus Fischer in the list of all-time top goalscorers in the German top-flight.
It was the prolific Pole’s 32nd league goal of 2020/21, and he is now just nine goals short of breaking Muller’s record of most goals scored in a league campaign.
“A lot,” replied Lewandowski when asked by Sport Bild what it would mean to break the club legend’s long-standing record, via Marca.
“[But the target of] this unique club legend is far away, I don’t want to worry too much.
“[If I get] one or two goals behind the 40 goals topic would be intense in my head.
“It would fill me with incredible pride. But Gerd Muller will always be Gerd Muller – [he is] unmatched.
“I might have a bit of mental stress: reaching this mark after almost 50 years would mean a lot to me.”
