Lionel Messi arrived in Paris earlier today to become a new PSG player, we need to break down the numbers of his contract. At the start of last week, everybody thought Leo was staying at the Catalan club with half of what he earned in his previous agreement. The last five years gave Messi a staggering €75 million per season after tax for five years.
Due to the club’s financial situation, the player agreed to get half of that but Joan Laporta wasn’t able to close the deal. When La Liga announced the CVC Investment Fund’s involvement in the deal, Florentino Perez quickly reminded Laporta that he was bound to him due to the Super League. Taking up on the CVC deal meant he was choosing sides and Perez convinced Barcelona to dismiss Messi. After that, PSG quickly stepped in to make history happen. This all took place on August 5 and it took them five days to reach an agreement.

According to Veronica Brunati, Leo Messi agreed to a two-year contract with the possibility to sign for one more year. In each of them, he is getting €37 million-plus €13 million in add ons. Also, the club agreed to pay the player a €50 million transfer fee because he arrived as a free agent. Then, his father is also getting a €15 million fee for his services as Leo’s agent.
In total, Messi will get €150 million free of tax all for himself without counting his father’s payment in the span of two years. If he agrees on the third year, the yearly wages will remain the same. At the end of the day, this proves that Messi didn’t lower his salary at PSG but he was willing to cut it at FC Barcelona in half. Even though his tears were clearly real last Sunday, it’s hard to accept his decision wasn’t about money just by looking at the numbers.
