Jerome Boateng has rejected the notion that it was the 8-2 humiliating defeat to Bayern Munich that made Lionel Messi revolt against Barcelona.

Bayern Munich won the treble in 2019/20 season that finished less than a fortnight ago. PSG were defeated in the final 1-0 for their sixth Champions League trophy. The highlight of their campaign was the 8-2 win over Bayern Munich.

Lionel Messi was dejected after the win and had decided to leave Camp Nou in its aftermath. Jerome Boateng does not believe in these grapevine speculations and has rejected the claims in an interview with Bild.

“You noticed in advance that there was drama between Messi and Barcelona,” the German defender said.

The Germany defender also reflected on Messi’s protracted move to former employers Manchester City. Boateng pointed at the trophy success the Argentine had with Pep Guardiola and believes it will be a deciding factor.

“Pep and Messi have celebrated great successes together, which is why both sides know that their philosophies would fit together.”

Boateng’s future has come under the clouds at the Allianz Arena. The veteran defender shared that he has a great bond with Flick and wants to continue under him.

“There have not yet been any talks beyond my contract, but it is clear to me that I will be happy to continue the path under Hansi Flick,” he said. “My family and I feel very much at home in Munich. I am sure that we can achieve a lot with this team again next year. I want to be part of it again.”

“Pressed on his relationship with Flick at Bayern, Boateng responded: “He’s absolutely clear on a human level, he doesn’t fool you, but he also demands something for it. He supported me, but also challenged me.”
