Nigeria’s slow start at AFCON has only made Osimhen hungrier for the continental trophy.
Victor Osimhen, the reigning African footballer of the year and Serie A champion with Napoli, has expressed his fervent desire to lead Nigeria to victory in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The 25-year-old striker, currently in Abidjan for the AFCON, shared his aspirations with AFP ahead of Nigeria’s crucial group game against hosts Ivory Coast on Thursday.
Having clinched the Serie A title and the African Footballer of the Year accolade in 2023, Osimhen acknowledges that winning the AFCON would mark a pinnacle in his career. “It would be one of the best moments of my life,” he stated, emphasizing the significance of achieving success with the national team.
“To win the African player of the year is just the dream of every young African player. For me to have won it shows the kind of things I have put in, the hard work, the sweat, the tears.”
As the eyes of Nigeria’s 220 million people rest on him, Osimhen is eager to add international success to his list of achievements. “I am really looking forward to winning something with the Super Eagles,” he added.
Following a 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria will take on Ivory Coast in a crucial AFCON game on Thursday.
