Let’s take a look at the best football teams in the Belgian top flight.

The latest UEFA rankings of the best European football leagues puts Belgium in the eighth place. The Belgian Pro League might not be as popular as some of the continent’s elite leagues, but it has certainly established its reputation as one of the best competitions for young talents to start their European careers.

Belgium’s constant flow of young talents depends on a highly competitive national league, which has become increasingly popular in recent years.

In this article, we’ll take a look at Belgium’s top five football clubs.

5- Genk

Since winning their first-ever Belgian championship in 2015, Genk has remained one of the most exciting teams in the league. However, their struggle for consistency has prevented them from repeating the same level of success in recent seasons.

After finishing as the league’s runner-ups in the 2022-23 campaign, Genk have returned to make another push for the title under Wouter Vrancken this season.

4- Club Brugge

As the Belgian champions, Brugge secured automatic Champions League qualifications from 2018 to 2022. The club’s fantastic run culminated in their qualification for the knockout stage last season, where they were eliminated by Benfica.

In the Belgian Pro League, however, Les Gazelles settled for a fourth place in the Championship round. Brugge’s decline has continued under Ronny Deila this season as they’ve struggled to reclaim their place among the Pro League’s elite sides.

3- Antwerp

Antwerp won the Belgian championship for the first time in 66 years when Toby Alderweireld scored a stunning last-minute goal against Genk on the final day of the 2022-23 campaign.

The dramatic title win, however, was long in the making. Antwerp has been among the league’s top four since the 2018-19 season, thanks to their smart transfer policy and form consistency.

2- Anderlecht

Anderlecht is the Belgian Pro League’s most successful team, with 34 championships. They have remained one of the country’s main football powerhouses despite failing to win the league since 2017.

Anderlecht’s disastrous start to the 2022-23 season under Felice Mazzu saw them finish the campaign in the 11th spot. However, they’ve made a strong comeback under Brian Riemer this season, making another push to reclaim the domestic trophy.

1- Union SG

Since making their comeback to the Belgian top flight in 2021, Union Saint-Gilloise have quickly developed into one of the league’s best teams.

After securing second and third spots in the two seasons that followed their promotion, Union SG seem ready to claim the trophy for the first time since 1935. The team’s combination of young talents and experienced stars has helped them to dominate the Belgian Pro League under the stewardship of Alexander Blessin.

Union have also found a solid start to their Europa League campaign, where they compete against Toulouse, LASK, and Liverpool in the group stage.
