Benfica held on to their top spot on the Group H table with a brilliant home display.
Benfica held Paris Saint-Germain to a 1-1 draw in their Champions League game on Wednesday. A solid defensive display by the hosts prevented the Parisians from leaving Lisbon with a win.
First UCL alarm for PSG?
The game started with both sides refusing to risk too much in their attacks while PSG slowly established their dominance over possession.
Following an assist from Neymar, Lionel Messi broke the deadlock with a beautiful curler in the 22nd minute.
Benfica immediately started their efforts to get back into the game, eventually scoring the equalizer ten minutes later. An own goal from Danilo Pereira nullified Messi’s goal, forcing PSG to restart their attacks after half-time.
This time, however, Benfica’s defence line did a brilliant job of controlling PSG’s devastating attacking trio.
Both Messi and Neymar found opportunities to restore their side’s lead but couldn’t convert the chances.
The draw keeps Benfica at the top of the Group H table while PSG sits second. The Parisians will return to Ligue 1 to meet Raims before hosting Benfica the next Tuesday.
