The Blues had to play the final 30 minutes of the game with ten players.

Ben Chilwell has apologised to Chelsea teammates and fans for his red card against Real Madrid.

Chelsea went 1-0 behind when Karim Benzema opened the scoring for his side in the first half. The Blues hoped to bounce back in the second period, but Chilwell’s red card changed the course of the game.

Following a brilliant through ball from Federico Valverde, Rodrygo ran past Chelsea’s backline to find himself in a one-on-one situation with Kepa Arizabalaga.

Chilwell then stopped him with a foul on the edge of the box, with the referee immediately sending him off. The Blancos weren’t able to convert the free-kick but stayed in charge of the game and doubled their lead through Marco Asensio 15 minutes later.

Chilwell took to Twitter to react to the incident on Thursday.

“Slept on it, and just want to apologise to my teammates and the fans,” the English star wrote.

“I made the decision in a split second last night and it was a mistake. I always give everything for the team and I will continue to do so.”

Chelsea will take on Brighton on Saturday before hosting Real Madrid for the second-leg game three days later.
