The two national teams called off their Euro 2024 qualifier after learning of the shooting in Brussels.
The Euro 2024 qualifier between Belgium and Sweden was abruptly abandoned at half-time due to a shooting in Brussels.
Tragically, two Swedish individuals lost their lives in the attack. The shooting, which is now being treated as an act of terrorism, took place hours before the game.
Speaking to VRT on Tuesday, Belgian Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden said police found a suspect in a cafe in Schaerbeek and shot him. She could not confirm if he had survived the shooting at the time.
Amidst the chaos, fans and players from Monday’s Belgium and Sweden match were instructed to remain in the stadium for their safety. The Sweden team and their supporters were later escorted by the police to ensure their security.
The two teams agreed to call off their game at half-time, with the scoreline level at 1-1.
It remains unclear whether the victims were in Brussels to attend the Belgium and Sweden game.
