The club has struggled to tie their star striker down to a new contract in recent weeks.
Bayern Director Hasan Salihamdzic has confirmed Robert Lewandowski wants to leave the club.
The Ballon d’Or runner-up is under contract at Allianz Arena until 2023. However, several German outlets have claimed Lewandowski’s agents have put Bayern under pressure to agree to a transfer to Barcelona.
The player has now informed the Bavarians about his intention to leave the club.
“I spoke to Lewa. In the conversation, he told me that he did not want to accept our offer to extend the contract and that he would like to leave the club,” Salihamidzic told Sky Sport Germany .
“He said that he would like to do something else. But our attitude hasn’t changed.
“Lewa has a contract until June 30, 2023. That’s a fact. I don’t deal with that because our stance has always been clear.”
Barcelona are the frontrunners to sign Lewandowski if he leaves the club this summer. The Catalans have chosen the Polish striker as their next transfer target for the number nine position, following their unsuccessful efforts to add Erling Haaland to their ranks.
Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez reacted to reports around Lewandowski’s move to Camp Nou on Saturday.
“When it comes to signing, age doesn’t concern me,” the Spaniard said ahead of Barca’s match against Getafe.
“We signed Dani Alves when he was 38!”
He added: “Players take care of themselves, they’re more professional. Alves, Ibrahimović, Modrić, Cristiano or Messi are examples”.
The new statement by Salihamdzic boosts Barca’s chances of signing Lewandowski this summer.
However, Bayern still has the possibility of forcing the 33-year-old to stay until the expiration of his contract.
