The Bavarians are in the market to add a new goalkeeper to their ranks.
Lothar Matthäus has urged Bayern Munich to sign David de Gea ahead of the new season, claiming the Spaniard can become their new No.1.
Manuel Neuer has recently suffered a setback in his lengthy recovery process, forcing Bayern Munich to look for a new top-class goalkeeper. The club have also agreed to sell Yann Sommer to Inter after keeping him at the club for six months.
Brentford’s David Raya was Bayern’s first priority for the position. But the goalkeeper rejected their offer for a loan deal with a buyout option last week.
“As FC Bayern, I would go for de Gea,” Matthäus said. “And in de Gea’s place, I would go to FC Bayern. With him, Bayern would have to a top keeper as Neuer replacement.
“He could even become their No.1 permanently if Neuer doesn’t come back.”
De Gea ended his 12-year spell at Manchester United earlier this summer, leaving the club as a free agent. Saudi Arabian clubs have already expressed their interest in signing the 32-year-old, but a possible offer from Bayern could convince him to stay in Europe.
“De Gea is at the best age for a goalkeeper and has proven his class at Manchester United,” the Bayern Munich legend added.
“This shouldn’t be about money, it’s a huge chance for him to play for a top European club, a big challenge. I’m not sure if he has another chance to move to such a top club.”
