The Bavarians crashed out of the Champions League quarter-finals for the third season in a row.

Bayern Munich “miss” having a reliable striker in their squad, according to club president Herbert Heiner.

The departure of Robert Lewandowski left Bayern with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting as their only choice for the No.9 spot.

The Cameroon international made a string of impressive performances during the first half of the season. But an injury kept him out of Bayern’s 3-0 defeat against Man City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash.

Choupo-Moting returned to Bayern’s lineup for the second leg on Wednesday. But he wasn’t able to help his side mount a comeback at Allianz Arena.

Bayern missed a host of goalscoring chances during the two matches, lacking enough attacking edge to counter Man City’s in-form backline.

“It was obvious we didn’t have a No. 9 who would change things up front,” Heiner said post-match.

“You can assume that we’ll strengthen our squad to be able to compete in the league and Champions League.”

Sporting director Hasan Salihamdizic was asked whether he regrets the decision to go into the season without a new striker.

“We all planned the squad together, including the former coaching staff. We’ll work on it in the summer,” Salihamdizic added.

According to reports in German media, Harry Kane remains Bayern’s priority target for the summer. The likes of Victor Osimhen and Randal Kolo Muani have also attracted interest from the Bavarians in recent months.
