The Bavarians have added another highly-rated defender to their squad ahead of the next season.

Bayern Munich have announced Matthijs de Ligt has joined the club on a five-year deal.

The Dutch defender ends his three-year spell at Juventus to continue his career at Allianz Arena. Bayern have paid an initial fee of €67m for De Ligt, with an extra €10m in performance-related add-ons.

“I’m very happy to be a player at this great club,” De Ligt said.

“FC Bayern is the most successful club in Germany, one of the most successful clubs in Europe and also in the world.”

He added: “Right from the start I felt honest appreciation of the sporting management, the coach, and the board, that convinced me. In addition, FC Bayern is an excellently managed club with big goals. I’m very happy to be part of Bayern Munich’s history.”

Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn added: “Matthijs de Ligt not only impresses in top international football with his playing qualities, but also as a guy who always leads the way in all his teams. He learned to take responsibility at a young age.

“A strong team doesn’t just need a strong attack and with this transfer we are strengthening our defense at an absolutely top level.”

De Ligt will most likely join his new teammates in their pre-season tour in the US. The Bavarians will face DC United in a friendly game on Thursday.
