Thomas Tuchel’s treble dreams at Bayern ends in his second game in charge.

Freiburg defeated Bayern Munich 2-1 in their DFB Pokal match on Tuesday. An uninspiring display from the Bavarians saw Freiburg knock them out of the competition.

First Allianz Arena win for Streich!

Freiburg manager Christian Streich had never beaten Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena before tonight. Given Freiburg’s form in recent weeks, the visitors were far from being the favourites to win the cup game.

Bayern controlled the possession from early on, putting pressure on Freiburg’s backline from both sides. Dayot Upamecano converted a corner from Joshua Kimmich to make it 1-0 for Bayern in the 19th minute.

But it didn’t take Freiburg too long to respond. A fantastic shot from Nicolas Hofler brought the visitors back into the game only eight minutes after Upamecano’s header.

After failing to restore their lead in the first half, Bayern tried to double down on their attacks after the break.

The likes of Serge Gnabry and Jamal Musiala came in. But the Bavarians rarely managed to create serious chances as Freiburg maintained their defensive integrity.

Freiburg then finished off the job when another shot from Hofler deflected off Musiala’s arm. The referee awarded the visitors a penalty in the 95th minute.

Lucas Holer smashed the ball into the roof of the net to win the game for Freiburg at Allianz Arena. The defeat ends Bayern’s dream of winning the treble under new manager Tuchel.

The Bavarians will take on Freiburg again in the Bundesliga on Saturday before travelling to Manchester to face City three days later.
