Bayern’s gap to Leverkusen at the top of the table extended to seven points after an unexpected defeat on home soil.

Werder Bremen defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 in their Bundesliga game on Sunday. The Bavarians’ dominance didn’t translate into goals at Allianz Arena.

What happened?

Bayern’s lacklustre start to the game allowed Bremen to control the flow of the game in midfield, preventing the hosts from making serious chances before the break. Bremen even scored an opener, but their goal was ruled out after a quick VAR review.

Bayern pushed to score an early goal at the beginning of the second period. But it was Bremen who finally broke the deadlock in the 59th minute.

Following an incredible cross-field pass from Marco Friedl, Mitchel Weiser latched onto the ball in the corner of the box before unleashing an excellent strike into the roof of the net.

The goal forced Bayern to put more bodies forward as Thomas Tuchel brought in Thomas Muller, Mathys Tel, and Leon Goretzka. The hosts dominated the possession throughout the second period but failed to convert their chances as their opponents showed fantastic defensive integrity. The defeat keeps Bayern in the second spot on the Bundesliga table, seven points away from Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten Leverkusen.

Bayern vs Werder Bremen: Man of the Match

Michael Zetterer deserves the Man of the Match title for his incredible performance in Bremen’s 1-0 win over Bayern. The Bremen goalkeeper made seven saves, stopping several goalscoring efforts from the hosts.
