Bayern Munich have had one of their key players pulled out of the squad on the eve of their Champions League matchday 3 tie.
Niklas Sule has taken into a period of self-isolation after testing positive for coronavirus, Bayern Munich confirmed on Monday.
It is understood that the center-back is asymptomatic, although no confirmation regarding his condition has been specified by the club.
The Germany international is now no longer in contention to play in Tuesday’s Champions League group stage fixture against RB Salzburg.
Bayern had a similar experience prior to their Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid last month when Serge Gnabry was pulled out of action following due to a false positive test.
Sule will also remain unavailable for the much-awaited Bundesliga clash between Bayern and Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
A statement released on the club’s official website read: “Niklas Sule has tested positive for Covid-19.
“The 25-year-old Bayern Munich defender is self-isolating at home and is doing well.”
Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Salzburg match, Hansi Flick expresses his discontentment over the unavailability of the 25-year old.
Flick told reporters: “Niklas is out, that’s obviously not ideal. It’s got hold of one of our players, we have to accept that.
“We’ll deal with it and I hope that’ll be the only case. I’ll think about the starting XI after today’s training.”
Sule has made nine appearances across all competitions so far this season for the Bundesliga champions. He will now have to wait a while before taking to the pitch again for Bayern as domestic football will go into the international break after the BVB match.
