The highly-rated center-back chose to stay in Bundesliga in spite of attractive options in the Premier League.
Dayot Upamecano says “it doesn’t get much higher” than Bayern Munich as he explains his decision to agree to move to the Allianz Arena rather than some other destinations.
Upamecano will join Bayern at the end of the season, having agreed to a five-year deal with the German and European champions in February.
The Bavarians are understood to have triggered the €42.5 million release clause on the Frenchman’s contract, which would have otherwise be valid until 2023.
Considered as one of the most exciting talents in Europe, the 22-year-old defender emerged on the radar of several European heavyweights after his rise to prominence with RB Leipzig in the last couple of seasons. Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Real Madrid were all reportedly interested in acquiring his services.
“I was sure relatively quickly that I wanted to stay in Germany and in the Bundesliga,” Upamecano told Sport Buzzer explaining his transfer decision. “I like it here, the level of the games, the fans, the stadiums.
“When FC Bayern gets in touch, you are really proud. It doesn’t get much higher, especially when you’ve played in Leipzig before.”
