The Bayern Munich manager was on the verge of joining Real Madrid before taking over Leipzig.

Julian Nagelsmann joined Bayern Munich in the summer, taking a big step in his managerial career. The German boss is 34 years old, but he has already gathered several years of experience as a manager.

Nagelsmann spent two seasons between 2019 and 2021 at Leipzig. Die Rotten Bullen secured their place among the Bundesliga front runners under Nagelsmann. They also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2020.

While still coaching Hoffenheim, Real Madrid were keen to hire Nagelsmann. However, the German manager turned down their offer to join Leipzig.

In a new interview, the Bayern Munich gaffer has explained his decision to snub the Blancos.

“There’s a big difference,” the Bayern boss said (via Marca).

“When you take over the first team at Hoffenheim like I did, where I had already coached the youth teams and knew everyone from the cleaners to the gardeners, the adaptation time is extremely short.

“But when you come into a new club fresh and have to meet everyone for the first time, it’s another dimension entirely. So it was okay for me to look for a higher rung than Hoffenheim, but not the highest rung possible.”

Despite a few unbalanced performances, Nagelsmann has lived up to expectations since joining Bayern.

The Bavarians ended the group stage of the Champions League with 18 points from six games. The German giants are also leading the league table with a four-point clearance.
