A crucial home victory extends Leverkusen’s lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings to five points.
Bayer Leverkusen defeated Bayern Munich 3-0 in their Bundesliga game on Saturday. The Bundesliga champions were humiliated at Bay Arena as Leverkusen made another massive step toward winning the league title.
What happened?
Bayern’s efforts to establish control over the game failed as Leverkusen’s attacks gradually gained momentum. Following a few missed chances, Josip Stanisic converted Robert Andrich’s low cross to put Leverkusen ahead against his parent club.
The hosts then effectively controlled the game until half-time as Bayern struggled to pull themselves together and push for an equalizer.
The same trend continued after the break, but this time, Leverkusen were quicker in finding the back of the net. Only five minutes into the second half, Alex Grimaldo made it 2-0 for the hosts by smashing home a brilliant through ball from Nathan Tella.
Thomas Tuchel made five changes to his lineup during the second period but failed to change the course of the game. Bayern barely made any serious goalscoring chances before their humiliating defeat was completed with a last-minute goal from Jeremie Frimpong.
