The French star has shown significant signs of improvement since Xavi’s arrival at the club.

Barcelona manager Xavi has praised Ousmane Dembele after his brilliant performance in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday.

The Catalans drew 2-2 against Juventus, with Dembele scoring both of Barcelona’s goals. The French winger opened the scoring for Xavi’s side before Moise Kean scored a quick equalizer for Juve.

Dembele completed his brace to put Barca ahead but Kean equalized again at the beginning of the second period.

The Catalans have added the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha to their attacking line ahead of the next season.

However, Xavi believes signing a contract extension with Dembele could be crucial for his side next season.

“He’s a different player, special,” Xavi Hernandez said (via Mundo Deportivo). “Because of the way we play, he gives us so much.

“He can make a huge difference for us. He has to be more consistent, score more goals and contribute more assists, something he improved on last year.

Since last November, when [he and the coaching staff] arrived, I’ve seen a happy Dembele. He’s always involved and he’s always shown that. That’s why I pushed so hard for him to stay.”

Dembele made 21 La Liga appearances for Barca last season, scoring once and providing 13 assists. He has, however, raised expectations after showing great form in the second half of the campaign.

Asked about Xavi’s praise after the game, Dembele responded: “I have the confidence of Xavi Hernandez and all my teammates.

“That’s very important for me. I’m very happy and I’m going to give everything for Barcelona.”
