The Spanish manager has developed the teenage midfielder into a vital part of his Barcelona squad.
Based on his current performances, it is hard to guess Gavi has played only seven months of senior-level football. The teenage sensation has played 26 appearances for the Blaugrana across all competitions, impressing with great passing his tactical awareness.
He also got his first Spain call-up and played for La Roja in their Nations League win over Italy in October. Xavi praises the teenager for his qualities but insists there is still room for improvement in certain areas.
“He’s very good at recovering possession, taking the ball away from the opponents. He’s very competitive and wins the right duels,” the head coach said (via SportsMax).
The Barca boss added: “He understands the high press very well; he’s excellent at that. He turns very well when we want to play in between the lines.
“But he needs to organise himself, he needs to find the right resources in the right moments – knowing when to attack the space better, when to let the wingers run or when to pass it. These are tactical situations where he needs to improve.
“His production is spectacular. He’s an incredible talent. At 17 years of age, to already have such an impact and play with the national side is marvellous.”
Xavi’s side sit fourth in La Liga with 38 points from their 22 matches. Gavi can make his 19th league appearance of the season when the Catalans take on Spanyol on Sunday.
